HONEYBEE VARIETIES
What, there's more than one kind of bee??!!! For starters, there are 4,000 varieties of bees that are native to North America. So let's stick with the common European honeybees (Apis Mellifera) that we keep in hives.
Some bees have been bred for a less defensive temperament, preferred swarming behaviors, maximum honey production, others for their adaptation to certain climates, and the list goes on. Unfortunately, we don't have one perfect breed with only the best traits and none of the less desirable. These charts show the positive and negative traits for the most common breeds.
